History
TIRCO-WESMANS AS was established in September 1895, as one of two departments of the privately owned insurance and average agency Joh. Wesmans Assurancebureau, Christiania (Oslo). The objective of the insurance department was to effect insurance on behalf of ÂGIR of Stockholm and Albingia of Hamburg, both of which companies Mr. Wesmans had become general agent to in Norway. The objective of the average department was to act as consultants to foreign marine insurance companies in case of damage or loss in the hull/machinery and cargo fields. This department was the first of its kind in Norway, and by turn of the century Joh. Wesmans Assurancebureau had become average agents to a great number of leading marine insurance companies and organisations throughout the world. Among the first to appoint J.W.A. as average agents in Norway were:
H.F. Mutzenbecher, Hamburg
Broderick, Leitch & Kendall, Liverpool
Xhoiay & Sim(p)son, London
National Board of Marine Underwriters, New York
Marine Underwriters Association of South Australia, Adelaide
Both enterprises of J.W.A. were successful, and in 1917 their activities had expanded to such an extent that Mr. Wesmans found it necessary to split up the original company into five different joint stock companies, a.o. the insurance agency Joh. Wesmans Assurancebureau A/S and the average agency Wesmans Havaribureau A/S.
From 1918 until the years following the Second World Was Wesmans Havaribuerau A/S experienced a steady growth. In 1941 the founder, Mr. Johan Wesmans, passed away, and his son, Mr. Ragnvald Wesmans took over as managing director. In June 1970 Ragnvald Wesmans also passed away and having no male heirs, the Wesmans family in September 1970 sold all shares in Wesmans Havaribureau A/S to Storebrand. Mr. John Ødegaard became managing director and chairman of the Board. Under the new management Wesmans Havaribureau A/S extended its activities appreciably in the fields of hull/machinery and p&i work.
On 1st of January 2009 Wesmans AS and Tirco Agencies AS gathered forces in order to provide an even better range and quality of services
